The Williams Petition

A new permanent page has been added to the Revolutionary War menu, under the Little River Regiment subheading, with information specific to the James Williams Petition of 1779. Click here to go directly to that page:

Two copies of the petition are known to exist, both in university library manuscript collections. The list of names on these petitions represent some of the men of the Little River Regiment. It is well within the realm of possibility that these signatures were collected at a Hammond’s Old Store meeting.

The new page has a section on each known copy of the petition itself, a section on the research of Mrs. Mildred Brownlee regarding the Adair signers of the petition, and a section on brand-new research, specific to Indian Trader and Author James Adair, a book by Shawn and Lois Potter.

I’m working on a comprehensive list of names of signers, in the order they signed, for cross-referencing. Many of the publish lists are incomplete, or a mash up from both sources.

More work is to be done, including updating any names at the Little River Regiment Honor Roll page to indicate that they signed the petition. I’ll post updates as information becomes available and as completed.
