Bad news and good news. The bad news, for me at least, is the parcel of land settled by Joseph Adair, Jr. has, after all these years, gone up for sale. The entire 800 acre parcel must be choice for development, as you will see by the asking price.

So, in addition to the fundraisers for the cemeteries on Hwy 56 and Hwy 76, I now need to raise an additional 26 million, fast.

Once I saw the parcel up for sale, I dug a little more and uncovered this gem, and a bit of reassurance that things might be lost –
Cultural Resources Identification Survey of the Clinton Adair Tract
A CRIS is an “investigation to provide the information necessary to assess the probability of the project area to contain significant cultural resources that are potentially eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP).”
The final result of the report, unfortunately, won’t protect most of the parcel from development. Extreme erosion is cited as the biggest factor in determining there was low potential to find anything more. There is a 20 acre section of floodplain, however, that is marked off for non-development or further testing, where artifacts may be preserved deeper than the study’s shovel-testing allowed them to go.
I will be visiting the area the beginning of December for the Laurens County Genealogy Society tour of Duncan Creek Presbyterian Church – this land will be seeing some drastic changes to come. I’ll be sure to document my visit and share it here.
